It makes me incredibly angry that over Fourth of July there was another mass shooting in our great Commonwealth.
According to officials, the horrifying incident unfolded after 8 p.m. when the assailant, armed with a military-style rifle, began firing shots both inside a home and on the open street. Panic spread among residents and passers-by as the attacker unleashed a barrage of gunfire, even targeting cars. One woman, driving her family home, had her car struck by bullets, resulting in injuries to her children.
The shooting spree came to an end when the police pursued the assailant into an alley and successfully apprehended him. The swift response by law enforcement prevented further casualties and brought a sense of relief to the traumatized neighborhood.
The victims of this senseless act of violence were ordinary individuals going about their daily lives. Among the deceased were Dajuan Brown, a 15-year-old high school student known for his infectious energy and dance moves; Lashyd Merritt, a 20-year-old recent high school graduate working for the Internal Revenue Service; Dymir Stanton, a 29-year-old sports enthusiast with a young daughter; Ralph Moralis, a 59-year-old restaurant worker who had been chatting with a friend before the gunfire erupted; and Joseph Wamah Jr., a 31-year-old resident who may have been the first victim. Two children, aged 2 and 13, also suffered injuries but are currently in stable condition.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Kimbrady Carriker, was arraigned on Wednesday morning and faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment. Authorities initially faced some confusion regarding Carriker’s gender identity, but it was clarified that he identifies as male. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, as investigators have not released significant details at this stage.
