Stan has three 'best picture' nominations but no wins. Furthermore, the picture that should have won the award more than any other, 2001: A Space Odyssey, was not even nominated in 1968.

His greatness may be attributed to the astounding 12 Academy Award nominations he got for various categories during his career; four of them were for Best Director, although Fellini never won any of them.
Charlie Chaplin's enigmatic theatricality may never be reproduced by any man, having directed seventy-seven films with generally creative comic subjects. As strange as it may sound, Charlie Chaplin never won an Academy Award for Best Director, and he was never nominated even once during his remarkable career spanning over eight decades.
