Mohamed Al Fayed, the former owner of the prestigious Harrods department store and a prominent figure in business and British high society, has passed away at the age of 94. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1929, his journey from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of business success is a remarkable tale.

Al Fayed’s entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity were evident from an early age. He started as a street vendor selling fizzy drinks in his native Alexandria but soon found his path to prosperity through his marriage to Samira Khashoggi, sister to billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. This union provided him with valuable connections and opportunities.

In the 1970s, Al Fayed made a significant move to the UK, where he began assembling an extensive real estate portfolio. His most prominent acquisition was the Ritz Hotel in Paris, which he co-owned with his brother Ali. However, it was his purchase of Harrods in 1985, following a heated bidding war, that catapulted him to international prominence.

Under Al Fayed’s ownership, Fulham Football Club also experienced a dramatic transformation, climbing from the third tier to the Premier League. His investments and dedication to the club were instrumental in its success.

Beyond his business endeavors, Mohamed Al Fayed was known for his philanthropic efforts. He generously supported causes such as Great Ormond Street Hospital and founded the Al Fayed Charitable Foundation in 1987, aiming to improve the lives of underprivileged and critically ill children.

However, Al Fayed’s life took a dramatic turn after the tragic car crash in 1997 that claimed the lives of his son, Dodi Fayed, and Princess Diana. He became embroiled in conspiracy theories, publicly speculating that the crash was orchestrated by Prince Philip and MI6, a claim that was ultimately debunked.

His pursuit of British citizenship also led to controversy, with the resignation of politicians and allegations of impropriety. In 2010, he sold Harrods to the Qatar sovereign wealth fund, using the proceeds to clear the company’s debts.

Despite the controversies that surrounded him, Mohamed Al Fayed’s impact on business, football, and British society cannot be denied. His net worth at its peak was approximately $1.8 billion, and his business interests extended to Punch Magazine, Kurt Geiger, Manhattan’s 75 Rockefeller Plaza, and luxury apartments in Hyde Park Residence.

His acquisition of Harrods, which he famously referred to as his “pyramid“, remained a symbol of luxury in London. His outspoken personality and pursuit of British citizenship kept him in the public eye for decades.

Additionally, Al Fayed left a lasting legacy in football, particularly with Fulham Football Club, where his financial investments helped the team achieve remarkable success. His larger-than-life personality was evident in his decision to erect a golden statue of Michael Jackson at the club’s stadium, an homage to his pop superstar friend.
