Singapore‘s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, has pledged unwavering “zero tolerance” towards any misdeeds by government officials in the wake of a recent wave of political scandals that have shaken the nation. These scandals have cast a shadow on Singapore’s reputation as a global financial hub.
In a parliamentary address, Prime Minister Lee emphasized the responsibility of the current generation to safeguard and uphold the nation’s integrity, maintaining it as an incorruptible and reputable system. This commitment comes in response to a series of events that have unfolded, challenging the ethical standards of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP).

The controversy escalated with the arrest of Transport Minister S. Iswaran and property tycoon Ong Beng Seng by Singapore’s anti-graft agency. This marked a significant moment, as it was the first time in almost forty years that a cabinet official faced corruption allegations. Furthermore, former House Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin‘s resignation, prompted by an extramarital affair with a fellow PAP MP, raised questions about personal conduct within the party.
The fallout from these incidents prompted an investigation into the renting practices of two other cabinet ministers, K. Shanmugam and Vivian Balakrishnan, regarding state-owned colonial bungalows. Eventually, both ministers were cleared of any wrongdoing.
Prime Minister Lee underlined two fundamental principles guiding his government’s actions in response to such scandals. Firstly, there is an unequivocal stance against any suspicion of wrongdoing, particularly in cases of potential corruption.
Secondly, when individuals stumble in their personal lives, the PAP is committed to addressing the matter with empathy and sensitivity, based on established party principles.
Lee acknowledged the public’s criticism of the time he took to address the affair involving Tan and Cheng, conceding that he should have acted sooner. Despite being informed about the situation in 2020, he chose not to take action to protect their families, a decision he now regrets.
Turning to Iswaran’s case, the prime minister clarified that ongoing investigations prevented him from discussing the matter in detail. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau stumbled upon information related to Iswaran while investigating a separate issue. Notably, there was no external tip-off or public scandal. Iswaran’s subsequent arrest raised questions about the government’s transparency and handling of such cases.
The scandal’s aftermath saw Iswaran’s salary slashed to 8,500 Singapore dollars, a drastic reduction from a cabinet minister’s standard starting salary. This step was taken in line with Singapore’s strategy of offering high salaries to cabinet officials to deter corruption.
Prime Minister Lee acknowledged that the PAP’s reputation had taken a hit due to these incidents but reassured Singaporeans that the party remained committed to upholding standards and ensuring trust in the nation’s governance system.
In conclusion, Singapore’s political landscape has been rocked by a series of scandals, challenging the PAP’s image of integrity and transparency. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s “zero tolerance” commitment and dedication to addressing these challenges head-on signal the party’s determination to restore public confidence and uphold the nation’s esteemed standards of governance.
