In 2022 alone, 674 cases were documented, a sharp contrast to the 295 cases reported four years ago. Pregnant women, unfortunately, have played a significant role in the surge, as they unknowingly pass the infection to their unborn babies. The health department urgently advises pregnant women to undergo syphilis testing during their first prenatal visit, in the third trimester, and again at delivery. In response, the city’s health department has waived fees for STD testing to combat the alarming rise.
