The music world is in mourning following the recent passing of Gary Young, the original drummer of the groundbreaking indie-rock band Pavement, at the age of 70. The legacy of Young, known for his unconventional drumming style and onstage antics, continues to influence the world of music.

Co-founders Stephen Malkmus and Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, both hailing from Stockton, California, established Pavement in 1989. Young’s studio, Louder Than You Think, became the birthplace of their musical journey, with their debut EP “Slay Tracks” and the influential album “Slanted and Enchanted” finding creation within its walls.

Young’s raw and spontaneous drumming style became the hallmark of Pavement’s early sound, earning them a spot in Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time for “Slanted and Enchanted.” His creative influence extended beyond drumming, as he brought an eccentric charm to the band’s live performances, distributing unexpected treats to fans and captivating audiences with headstands.

The studio’s quirkiness, including a malfunctioning track on their recording machine, contributed to the unique sound of “Slanted and Enchanted.” Collaborator Bob Nastanovich recalled Young’s pivotal role during the album’s creation, emphasizing his invaluable contributions.

Although Young departed from the band after the 1992 Watery, Domestic EP, his impact endured. He returned to produce tracks for Pavement’s final EP “Major Leagues” in 1999 and joined the band for special shows in 2010, showcasing the enduring camaraderie between him and his former bandmates.

Beyond Pavement, Young pursued solo projects, including albums like “Hospital,” “Things We Do for You,” and “The Grey Album.” His partnership with recording engineer Richard Selleseth yielded the record “Malfunction” in 2016, showcasing his ongoing commitment to musical innovation.

In recognition of his lasting influence, the documentary “Louder Than You Think” premiered earlier this year at SXSW, offering an intimate glimpse into Young’s life and his significant role in shaping Pavement’s iconic sound.

As fans and the music industry reflect on Gary Young‘s contributions, his creative spirit and unique approach to music remain a testament to the power of artistic exploration. His legacy lives on in the melodies he helped create, the memories he shared with audiences worldwide, and the indelible impact he made on the indie-rock genre.
