UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the release of the kidnapped staff and strongly condemned the act of kidnapping as an inhumane and unjustifiable crime. The release came after a prolonged period of negotiations involving various parties, including officials from Oman, demonstrating international efforts to secure their freedom.
The released individuals, consisting of four Yemenis and one Bangladeshi, were reported to be in good health and spirits, despite enduring the challenges of isolation during their captivity. The top UN official in Yemen, David Gressly, expressed relief at their release, underscoring the arduous nature of their ordeal.
The abduction took place in Yemen’s southern region of Abyan on February 11, 2022, by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), an affiliate of the global Al Qaeda network. This incident underscores AQAP’s persistent presence in southern Yemen and its efforts to exploit the ongoing conflict for its own gain.
The release of the UN staff members follows increased diplomatic efforts to bring stability to Yemen, including recent initiatives between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels. Yemen has grappled with conflict since 2014, when Houthi rebels seized control of the capital, Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led coalition intervention to restore the internationally recognized government.
The successful release marks a moment of hope amidst Yemen’s ongoing struggles. It reinforces the international community’s commitment to combating terrorism and fostering a more secure environment. As the country navigates its path toward stability, the freedom of these UN staff members provides a glimmer of optimism for a brighter future.
