Reports from Russia’s Health Ministry reveal a staggering toll of 115 people injured in the explosion and ensuing fire, with 35 unfortunate souls succumbing to their injuries, among them three innocent children. As the wounded, including 16 children, continue their battles for recovery, 65 of them remain hospitalized, while eleven individuals, including two children, remain in grave condition.
In response to this tragedy, Dagestan’s authorities have pledged financial support to the affected families. A sum of 1 million rubles (approximately $10,000) will be provided to the families of the deceased, while those injured will receive compensation ranging from 200,000 to 400,000 rubles (about $2,000 to $4,000). Plans are underway to airlift some of the injured to Moscow for specialized medical treatment, as Makhachkala lies nearly 1,600 kilometers (990 miles) to the south of Moscow.
This heart-wrenching incident has prompted Russian authorities to launch a criminal investigation into the blast, while the nation mourns the loss of life. In a gesture of solidarity, Tuesday has been designated a day of mourning throughout Dagestan.
Tragedy struck again in Siberia, as a separate explosion at an oil mine in the Khanty-Mansiysk region took two lives and injured five individuals. This recent disaster stands as the deadliest explosion in Russia since April 2022, when a fire at a defense research facility claimed 22 lives and left several others wounded in Tver. Just weeks prior to the Dagestan explosion, an explosion at a factory north of Moscow inflicted one fatality and left 84 others injured, adding to the nation’s recent spate of tragedies.
As the affected regions and their families reel from the aftermath, the resilience of the Russian people shines through, with authorities and citizens alike coming together to provide aid, support, and condolences during these trying times.
