Silvio Berlusconi, the charismatic former Italian prime minister and media tycoon, has passed away at the age of 86. Berlusconi, who was diagnosed with leukemia, remained active in politics until the end, serving as a senator and a partner in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government. Known for his larger-than-life personality, he was Italy’s longest-serving premier but faced numerous scandals throughout his career.

Berlusconi’s influence extended beyond politics. He played a pivotal role in shaping Italy’s media landscape, owning television and newspaper interests. He also founded the AC Milan football club and held the title of Italy’s richest person for a decade. His rise to power was reminiscent of Donald Trump’s later political aspirations, as he presented himself as a self-made man and used his media empire to boost his political career.

However, critics viewed Berlusconi as a tax-evading playboy who exploited his power to protect his business interests. He faced legal battles throughout his life, including the infamous “Bunga Bunga” controversial adult party scandal, which concluded in February 2023. Despite his legal troubles, he never spent time behind bars and successfully appealed convictions for fraud and corruption early in his political career.

Berlusconi’s tenure as prime minister was marked by controversy. His decision to join the US-led invasion of Iraq and his unfiltered comments, including insults directed at fellow leaders, divided Italians. He cultivated friendships with notable figures such as Muammar Gaddafi and Vladimir Putin, defending the latter during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. His personal life also drew attention, with revelations of controversial adult parties and his relationships with young women leading to the end of his second marriage.

Berlusconi, who was born in Milan in 1936, was a captivating entertainer and businessman from a young age. He amassed a large business encompassing construction, media, and football. During his 31-year ownership of AC Milan, he delivered the team enormous success, winning five European Cup and Champions League crowns. However, following a period of poor performance, he sold the club in 2017 and then acquired Monza in 2018.

Berlusconi’s death has left a void in Italian politics and the media. Political figures across the spectrum paid tribute to him, acknowledging his influence and controversial legacy. His passing marks the end of an era and will continue to spark debates about his impact on Italian society for years to come.
