In the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Odesa region of Ukraine has become the target of Russian drone strikes, resulting in significant damage and fires at the port and grain facilities. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian troops used Shahed drones to attack the port infrastructure, damaging a grain elevator and causing fires at critical facilities responsible for transporting the country’s crucial grain exports.
Since leaving a deal that allowed Ukraine to export grain through Odesa, Russia has intensified its strikes on the country’s ports. Starting from July 17, there have been numerous drone and missile attacks on Odesa’s port and the region’s river ports, which are being used as alternative routes.
Ukraine’s South operational command revealed that the main target of these attacks was the port and industrial infrastructure of the region. The aftermath of the attacks saw industrial and port facilities engulfed in flames and a grain elevator severely damaged.

Ukraine’s air force managed to intercept 23 Shahed drones across the country, with most of the drone interceptions taking place in Odesa and Kyiv. In one instance, all ten drones fired at Kyiv were successfully intercepted, avoiding potential devastation.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his outrage over the targeted attacks, emphasizing that these actions directly threaten the region’s ports, grain facilities, and global food security. He urged the world to respond to the escalating situation.
As the conflict continues, civilians continue to suffer. Two people were wounded in Kherson due to shelling, while in Donetsk, four others were injured in Russian attacks over the past day.
The situation remains tense, with the city of Nikopol, located across the river from the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, being shelled multiple times.
In response to the attacks, Ukraine remains on high alert, deploying anti-aircraft units to defend its airspace. Despite the destruction and casualties, the Ukrainian military’s actions have helped minimize the potential harm caused by these drone strikes.
The international community closely watches these developments, with global leaders being urged to take necessary measures to prevent further escalation and safeguard peace in the region.
