In a televised speech to the country, Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the necessity of unity and condemned the Wagner group’s continued violent revolt. He declared that he would not allow a civil war to erupt in the country and referred to the rebellion as a criminal and reckless campaign akin to an armed mutiny.
Without explicitly naming the owner of the Wagner military company, Putin denounced the rebellion as a betrayal and treason to Russia, especially during a critical time when the nation is facing significant challenges from the West’s military, economic, and information machinery. He underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the battle being fought would determine the fate of the Russian people.
Putin stressed that any internal turmoil poses a severe threat to the country’s statehood and its citizens. He expressed his concerns, stating that such unrest would be detrimental to Russia as a whole. Additionally, he issued a stern warning, asserting that all those involved in preparing the armed rebellion and resorting to blackmail and terrorist methods would face legal consequences.
Wagner Mercenary Group Challenges Russian Military Leadership in Bold Rebellion
In particular, Putin directed his message to the Wagner soldiers, urging them to make the right choice and refrain from participating in criminal acts. He emphasized that they should avoid making a fatal mistake that would lead to tragic consequences. Instead, he called for them to discontinue their involvement in the rebellion.
The head of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, had taken control of military facilities in Rostov-on-Don, including an airfield. Prigozhin accused Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov of incompetence and neglecting to supply his troops with necessary weapons and ammunition for an extended period.
Surprisingly, Prigozhin later revealed his dissatisfaction with Russia’s intentions for striking Ukraine, claiming that the strike was mostly motivated by Shoigu’s ambition to become a marshal and acquire a medal. He clarified that the goal of the war was not to demilitarize or denazify Ukraine.
Shortly after Putin’s vow to crush the armed rebellion, the Wagner group responded by stating that the Russian President had made the wrong choice in his address and hinting at the imminent appointment of a new premier for the country. The mercenaries, led by Prigozhin, claimed control over two Russian cities as part of their endeavor to remove the military leadership. They boasted of downing three Russian helicopters and encountering little resistance from the National Guard.
Putin, visibly dismayed by the mutiny, referred to it as a “stab in the back” and accused Prigozhin of betraying Russia. He reiterated the severity of the situation and emphasized that those who engaged in treasonous activities, planned and organized the armed rebellion, or turned against their fellow soldiers would be held accountable for their actions.
President Vladimir Putin sent a strong message to the country, pledging to defend Russia and its people from the ongoing armed rebellion led by Yevgeny Prigozhin. He condemned the rebellion as a grave threat to the country’s stability and announced that necessary measures would be taken to address the situation. Putin called for unity and appealed to those involved in the rebellion to reconsider their actions and cease their participation in criminal activities.
