Niger President Mohamed Bazoum has been removed from power in a military coup, citing a deteriorating security situation and governance issues. Colonel Amadou Abdramane and a group of soldiers made the announcement on national television. The country’s borders are closed, and a nationwide curfew is in effect. This marks the seventh coup in the West and Central Africa region since 2020, raising concerns for Western efforts to combat the jihadist insurgency. International leaders, including the US and European Union, have called for Bazoum’s release and condemned the coup’s attempt to undermine democracy.
