George Michael’s Hidden Health Battles Revealed

Remembering the Icon. George Michael’s untimely death and the hidden health struggles that haunted his legendary career.

On a fateful Christmas Day in 2016, the world mourned the sudden loss of George Michael, an iconic figure in the music industry. The renowned singer, celebrated for his extraordinary voice and distinctive style, was tragically discovered lifeless at his Oxfordshire residence by his partner, Fadi Fawaz. The devastating news shattered their plans for a joyous Christmas lunch as Fadi realized that George had peacefully passed away during his slumber.

Months later, on March 7, 2017, the senior coroner for Oxfordshire, Darren Salter, revealed the cause of George Michael’s untimely demise. The pop star had succumbed to natural causes, specifically dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and a fatty liver. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a heart muscle disease that weakens and enlarges the heart chambers, impeding their ability to effectively pump blood throughout the body, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath.

Along with dilated cardiomyopathy, George also suffered from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Although his death was due to natural causes, these underlying health issues shed light on the profound tragedy surrounding the loss of this musical virtuoso.

In addition to the revelation of his heart condition, George Michael’s autopsy revealed a long-standing battle with fatty liver disease. The accumulation of fat within liver cells, known as steatosis, is the initial stage of this condition and is relatively harmless. However, as it progresses to steatohepatitis, the liver becomes inflamed, exacerbating the situation. Persistent inflammation leads to the development of scar tissue around the liver and nearby blood vessels, ultimately culminating in cirrhosis, where the liver shrinks, becomes scarred, and forms nodules.

Individuals over the age of 50 are at a higher risk of developing fatty liver disease, especially when other conditions such as metabolic syndrome or diabetes are present. Unfortunately, George Michael succumbed to these risk factors, causing his liver to deteriorate.

The world said its last goodbyes to George Michael amid the tragic news of his health difficulties. On March 29, 2017, family, friends, and fans gathered at Highgate West Cemetery to honor and remember him. The burial marked the end of an era in the music industry, which was mourning the passing of one of its most renowned, influential, and beloved figures.

George Michael’s legacy as a true legend endures through his angelic voice and inspiring artistry. As the world continues to mourn his untimely passing, his timeless music continues to touch the hearts of millions.
