The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has released projections for the fastest growing and declining industries in America between 2021 and 2031. These projections provide valuable insights into the shifts in the labor force, enabling workers and businesses to stay informed about crucial employment trends. Among the fastest growing industries, Event Promoters, Agents, and Managers lead the way with an impressive predicted growth rate of 39%, employing over 180,000 workers by 2031. Following closely behind is Amusement Parks and Arcades, expected to experience a 38% increase and add over 60,000 new employees in the same period. The Performing Arts industry secures the third position, set to grow by 35% and employ around 100,000 workers by 2031. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Employment Projections)

The Leisure and Hospitality sector dominates the top-ranking industries, with seven out of the 20 fastest growing industries belonging to this category. This sector’s resilience is evident as it recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a lower baseline in 2021. On the other hand, the fastest declining industries face a challenging future. Tobacco Manufacturing leads this group, projected to witness a significant decrease of 53% in employment, bringing its workforce down to just 5,000 employees by the end of the decade. Automation, rather than waning smoking habits, seems to be driving this decline. CDs & Tapes Manufacturing is also expected to suffer a 51% reduction in employees by 2031.

Industries in the Manufacturing sector comprise most of the declining industries, with various factors contributing to their slumps. Some, like Printing, Cable Programming, and Newspaper and Book Publishers, face shifting consumption habits. Others, including Textiles, Apparel, and Furniture Manufacturing, are set to experience further automation and offshore production.

As we delve into the future of employment trends in the U.S., it’s crucial to consider the impact of rapidly emerging technologies. While the BLS projections do not account for the rise of generative AI, recent reports suggest that AI could potentially replace around 300 million jobs worldwide in the next decade. Alongside this, demographic trends, such as slower population growth and an aging workforce, will also play a significant role in shaping the future employment landscape.

Staying informed about these employment trends is essential for individuals and businesses to make strategic decisions, adapt to changing industries, and capitalize on growth opportunities in the evolving job market.
