The Black Rock Desert, typically a dry and dusty landscape, saw more than 2 to 3 months’ worth of rain in just 24 hours, creating thick, ankle-deep mud that paralyzed the festival grounds. Tragically, amidst the chaos, the festival experienced a fatality. A 40-year-old man lost his life, prompting an investigation by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office. While the circumstances surrounding the death were unrelated to the weather, it added to the overall sense of uncertainty and concern.

The festival’s organizers initially planned to burn the iconic figure on Saturday night but were forced to reschedule it for Monday night due to the impracticality of moving heavy equipment in the muddy conditions. This delay was the second of its kind, as initial plans had slated the burn for Saturday night.
