The international community has rallied to support Morocco in its hour of need. Spain, Qatar, Britain, and the United Arab Emirates have sent aid, while the United Nations offered support. The United States dispatched a team of disaster experts, and President Joe Biden pledged assistance.
In addition to the human toll, the earthquake has caused extensive damage to historic sites. UNESCO has dispatched a mission to assess the damage and prepare for reconstruction. Part of a 12th-century mosque tower in Marrakech’s Old City collapsed, causing further devastation.
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI declared three days of national mourning, and flags are flying at half-mast across the nation. Relief efforts are underway, with the establishment of a commission to provide care, housing, and food for those affected. Mosques nationwide will hold funeral prayers for the victims.
The quake’s impact on educational services is also significant, with the suspension of classes in 42 rural communities and villages in affected provinces.
As Morocco grapples with this disaster, the world watches and offers support, hoping for miracles amidst the rubble. It is a somber reminder of the vulnerability of regions prone to seismic activity and the urgent need for international solidarity in times of crisis.
